Candlelit vigil in West Street this evening for the people of Gaza

From midnight tonight, Thursday 12th December, over 1,400 people across the island of Ireland, including Sabrina Higgins, the President’s wife, will be taking part in a 24-hour fast to raise awareness and funds for the people of Gaza.

A group from Drogheda are participating in the fast and they have also organised a candlelit vigil from 6-6.30pm this evening, Thursday 12/12/2024, outside St. Peter’s Church on West Street and they would love for members of the public to stand with them for half an hour or so.

The national event is organised by Nenagh Friends of Palestine and a Palestine solidarity group from Belfast led by a few former H-Block Hunger Strikers.

It has been endorsed by well-known Irish personalities including Sabina Higgins, Trevor Hogan, Frances Black, Christy Moore, Belfast hip hop trio Kneecap and Gerry Adams (who is also taking part in the fast).

It’s quite a unique display of Irish solidarity for Palestine. For more information on the Hunger for Justice campaign see their Facebook page .

Funds are being raised for The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). For more detail on this, see the GoFundMe page. https://www.gofundme.com/f/hunger-for-justice-gaza?modal=donations&tab=all
