There is no doubting the fact that Drogheda is woefully behind the curve when it comes to facilities for cyclists.
Of the few cycle lanes that have been installed, few are actually separated from motorised traffic and none could be described as properly safe.
The restoration of the ramparts walk and cycle path has been hugely popular with Drogheda residents of all ages, especially during the Covid lockdowns, and it has finally opened a section of the Boyne Valley to people in wheelchairs, but there is a lot more that needs to be done.
Peope need to be able to get out of the house for exercise and fresh air or travel to work or school in a safe environment away from traffic but that is simply not possible for thousands of people in Drogheda.
Now a group of cycling enthusiasts is trying to establish a campaign group for cycling in Drogheda and they’re looking for people to get involved.
“We intend to promote cycling as an attractive option for transport in Drogheda and to campaign for more cycling infrastructure around town” said spokesperson Noel Hogan.
“We’re hoping to set up a zoom meeting soon to broaden our group and a normal public meeting as soon as the pandemic abates. Right now we’re looking for people to get involved in our committee.
“We’re planning to promote cycling as a positive alternative to car travel in Drogheda and to campaign and lobby for appropriate and safe cycling infrastructure throughout the town.”
