Independent Councillor Kevin Callan is seeking the public’s views and opinions on installing a dog park in a public park in Drogheda on a trial basis to see if they could be a welcome addition to the dog owners and walkers of the town.
Councillor Callan, who has two rescued dogs himself, said that he saw some really successful examples of small fenced and low maintenance dog parks in New York City where the City Council incorporate them into public parks.
“It’s a win-win for the dog owners and parks staff I met and spoke with whilst in New York on a recent holiday” he said.
“One example which can be google map searched easily is Union Square in Manhattan where a small park, much smaller than what we have in Drogheda at the Glen or Dominic’s Park easily accommodates a dog park area.”
A dog park is a place that is fenced off and gated and has a surface that can be washed, the area would have drinkers and seating as well as disposal bins.
Councillor Callan said: “we need to be continuously looking to add facilities to the public spaces of our town and this type of project does not cost a lot but could give dogs and their owners a space to enjoy and also help reduce dog fouling in our parks as well.
“I am placing the matter on the agenda of the next Borough Meeting in May but would love to hear peoples views on whether this is something that could work in Drogheda.
Cllr Callan is looking for your opinion and you can email him at Kevin.callan@louthcoco.ie or message him on Facebook.
