Callan demands action on Drogheda’s derelict buildings

Calls on property owners to keep buildings in good order

The neglect by their owners of buildings on the streets of Drogheda continues unabated but hopefully they will soon be brought to account.

Councillor Kevin Callan raised the issue at yesterday evening’s Borough Council meeting which, ironically enough, was being held in the wonderfully restored and maintained buildings at Millmount.

Councillor Callan specifically mentioned the old Brady’s department store at the bottom of Scholes Lane on Narrow West Street which has been allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair that it is now a danger to pedestrians with plaster and windows looking like they are ready to fall onto the street and pavement below.

Councillor Callan told the meeting that materials from the front of the building was already falling onto the public footpaths.

He asked the Council to make contact with the property owners to get them to take the necessary action.

Cracked masonry and loose windows on the old Brady’s store.

“There is a clear risk to the public from cracking plaster which appears to be becoming loose by roots which are visible from street level and the areas affected are at some considerable height”.

Mark Johnston from the Council’s Operations Section told Councillor Callan that the matter would be referred to the Dangerous Buildings Section to investigate.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Callan said that the issue of dereliction and materials falling off buildings and in particular historic buildings needs to be dealt with every single time that we see it happen.

“If someone owns a building and thinks they can allow it to fall into disrepair, we need to consider all appropriate enforcement action available to us to ensure that property owners realise their obligations to keep the property in good order.”
