Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has highlighted a situation that has developed in recent weeks with drivers, probably not from the town, turning right from Patrick Street at Peggy Moore’s Pub and heading the wrong way up the one way street towards the schools at Sunday’s Gate.
Callan has raised the issue with both Louth County Council and the Garda Traffic Corp and has said that action is needed before the schools return.
“I have been notified by people who have witnessed drivers cars who are obviously not from the area and are lost or confused and are turning right from Patrick Street through Sunday’s Gate and the schools.
“The knock on effect is immediate risk to pedestrians using the crossings and cars travelling around the corner from the schools towards Peggy Moores” Cllr Callan said, adding that he is calling for both increased policing and signage.
“It is not clear if this is some sort of a GPS issue with cars unaware of traffic flow being one way but if we increase signage in advance of the junction as well as at it, this may help prevent it happening in future” he said.
“The priority is safety of both pedestrians and motorists and in particular students of both schools who will be returning in September.
“A vehicle getting lost and stuck here during school drop off or pick up would cause a massive traffic issue so we need to resolve the issue now.”
