It has been over two years since juvenile athletes from across Louth could compete in their county track & field championships, and last weekend saw a very welcome return to competition for athletes, coaches and parents alike.
Stellar work from the track & field competition team of Athletics Louth saw athletes back in action on Saturday and Sunday, in the familiar surroundings of Bush Track, near Carlingford.
Due to Covid restrictions it was necessary to keep numbers to a minimum, and so day 1 & 2 of the championships were confined to the older age groups, from ages u13 to u19.
With the sun shining, and the delight on everyone’s faces to finally be back to competitive action, the weekend was a great success, with some very happy juvenile athletes, all glad to be back!
Boyne AC Javelin throwers were first up on Saturday, with a win and the gold medal for all three in their respective age groups, Euan Canniffe in u19, Max Kingston in u17 and Oliver Carolan in u14.
Attention then turned to the track, where Euan placed 4th in the 200m sprint, and 3rd in the u19 Long Jump.
Talented sprinter Sean Stratton ran a superb 200ms to take the win in the u17 event, followed by Max Kingston in 3rd place, who also took the silver medal in his Long Jump competition.
Rounding out the day, super sprinter, Leon King Abor ran a great race in his u19 200m, despite being out of age, taking a very comfortable win.
Sunday proved to be just as lucrative a day for the young Boyne AC athletes in action. Ledley King Abor was first up for the club, with a great run in his u14 200m sprint to just get pipped on the line for 2nd place, while it was a gold for his sister Nina in her u16 200m race, cruising across the line in a comfortable finish.
Sean Cummins proved his training is paying off with a great run in his u15 200m to finish 2nd, and followed this up with another silver medal in a very impressive and well-judged 1,500m race.
Sean Stratton was back for more and took yet another win, this time in the u17 100m sprint, with Adam Byrne running well and finishing closely behind to take the 2nd podium spot.
Once again, Leon King Abor finished off the short sprints with a blistering 11.03 secs (hand-timed) run in his u19 100m, crossing the finish line first, and looking like there was still room for more!
Day 3 continues this weekend, with more Boyne AC athletes in action, dates are yet to be decided for the younger age groups, but it is hoped they will be scheduled soon.
