Boyne AC 5K in memory of Harry Mallon and Willie Connor

The annual Boyne 5k road race, hosted by local club Boyne AC makes a welcome return on September 18th following a two-year absence due to Covid with a brand-new route, promising a fast and flat course, always a bonus when trying to set a new personal best time!

The race is held in memory of two late stalwarts of Boyne Ac, Harry Mallon and Willie Connor. Harry passed away in 2015 and is still dearly missed by all who knew him. A constant presence in Meadow View field at the juvenile training sessions, he was a dab hand at organizing the parking, and not bad at digging out a long jump pit too!

The inaugural Harry Mallon 4 mile road race back in 2016 saw the beginning of a successful annual local run, with large numbers of participants, young and old, of all abilities, that has now become the Boyne 5k.

The late Willie Connor is a name familiar to many in Drogheda. A popular local man, who sadly passed away in 2017, Willie was a founding member of Boyne AC and served as honorary president for many years.

Always glad to help out with the club in his latter years, the older members of Boyne AC have many a fond memory of the ever smiling, strong but quiet personality that was Willie Connor.

Delighted to be back in action in 2022, the hard-working race committee have pulled out all the stops to ensure a super race for all those planning to take part, and with the entries flying in already, it is set to be just as popular as ever.

Starting at 11.00 am, the race now begins in the Lourdes Stadium. A lap of the 400m track, will then see the runners take a right out of the stadium onto Boyle O’Reilly Terrace, from there it continues along the road past the Lourdes Hospital and then takes a right onto the Twenties.

Continuing on straight, past DIFE and under the bridge, runners will turn at the marked half way point and make their way back along the route, back into the stadium and finish with another lap of the track.

The route is guaranteed to give a super quick time to both experienced and beginner runners, and with plenty of post-race refreshments on offer, the day itself is promised to be a huge success.

Entry is still available at www.myrunresults.com, or on the day at the Lourdes Stadium. All details are available on Boyne ACs Facebook page.
