Drogheda man Bobby McCormack is setting off shortly to deliver an important message to people around Ireland about poverty, inequality and climate change. Appropriately enough, he’ll be travelling under his own steam – on a delivery bike!
Bobby, the CEO of the Drogheda based development NGO Development Perspectives (DP), will be representing a consortium called Saolta when he embarks on a Road Show running from June 21st to 25th to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
At the same time that Bobby sets off from Drogheda, Project Officer Nick Doran, will be leaving Sligo on his bike.
The pair will eventually will meet up in Moate which is the home of Irish Rural Link, another Saolta partner. They will deliver workshops in towns along the way highlighting the importance and relevance of the Global Development Goals to communities in Ireland.
The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of global commitments to end poverty, protect the planet and promote peace, justice and equality by 2030.
Ireland played a central role in the process which led to the agreement of these 17 goals which were signed up to by 193 UN member states. Along with these member states were over eight million NGOs, civil society organisations and the private sector organisations which helped to develop, and subscribed to these ambitious targets.
Development Perspectives believes that in order for these goals to be successful the public need to be aware of and crucially involved and active in realising them.
Throughout the bike tour, outdoor training sessions will be facilitated, introducing the Global Goals to communities at each stop.
These workshops will be based around participatory, experiential learning methods and will explore the relevance of the Goals to local communities, why they are important, and what is their impact, both locally and globally.
“This bike tour has presented the perfect opportunity to convert some of the challenges presented by COVID19 into opportunities” Bobby said. “An opportunity to be creative, an opportunity to engage Irish communities and an opportunity for change.”
Registration for workshops will open on June 1st. For more details CLICK HERE.
Please note, all workshops will have limited numbers and will follow current HSE guidelines.
