Big Tree is a Big mess, says local Councillor

Independent Councillor Declan Power has called on Louth County Council to do something about what he says are severe health and safety concerns that have left The Big Tree in Clogherhead derelict and in a big mess.

“This building in the heart of the village and is in total disrepair” he said.

He added that the interior of the building is completely destroyed from walls to ceilings, and that in the past number of years it has become a hub for anti-social behaviour to which the fire service has been called on several occasions.

Councillor Power told Drogheda Life that a couple of years ago he had tried to get the Council to acquire the building using a Compulsory Purchase Order with the possibility of turning it into a community facility for the youth of the area or a space for remote working, a concept that has become more prominent over the last couple of years due to Covid.

“It is shameful that the owners have let this building go to rack and ruin” Power said. He described the building as “…a complete eyesore, another derelict building that, in my opinion, should never have been granted planning permission that contravenes with the character of the village.”

“Louth County Council Director of Services Paddy Donnelly said that a dangerous and derelict site notice has been placed on this building” said Cllr. Power..

“The works required have not been actioned; therefore, the matter is proceeding to court, most likely in October. Arrangements will be made to secure the building as soon as is practical.”

Since he reported the matter on Monday Louth County Council has boarded up the building.
