A former professional poker player from Slovenia who now lives in Bettystown with his wife and two children has turned his hand to making music in venues throughout Ireland.
It seems that Jerry and Elza Miles (original names Jernej and Urška Šorn) were destined to make sweet music together ever since they first met at a business seminar in Slovenia.
They didn’t see each other again for another year when they bumped into each other again as they both went for singing lessons to the same teacher.
Both of them were interested in making music their career but had been working in all manner of jobs – as well as poker, Jerry had tried his hand at everything from construction work to selling solar panels and investment portfolios.
Their musical journey is full of twists and turns. They both went to Slovenia’s got talent and other TV auditions. Jerry was playing in different bands as a guitarist and singer and was also busking in Dublin.
He was determined to turn his music into a profession but struggled to succeed. Many times he has sought other jobs and start other businesses to support his family.
Until April 2022 he was playing poker professionally online. His investor who was backing multiple players had to back out due to losses accumulated across his stable.
With nothing else to do, Jerry focused on recording a music video for their original song “When the Sun Starts to Shine”.
With the help of their friend, Jerry and Elza recorded their first music video on Mornington beach early one the morning to catch the sunrise.
Jerry edited the video and they released it on YouTube on the 19th of June. They also released the song on most streaming platforms on the 19th of September.
When the Sun Starts to Shine talks about the time when the couple decided to sleep in separate bedrooms, as a new-born and a toddler were waking up multiple times during the night.
Jerry was concerned about the effect this could have on their relationship but they both soon realised they liked this new way of living as they were getting a much better night’s sleep.
Jerry and Elza are now determined to make a full-time living with music. Jerry has been doing live gigs in pubs across Ireland and Elza joins him on the events closer to home due to family commitments.
They have been invited to join Vlado Kreslin, one of the biggest names in Slovenian music, on stage when he comes to Dublin on the 7th of October. For Jerry, this is a dream come true as it was Vlado’s music that inspired him to start learning acoustic guitar in 2006.
Meanwhile the musical duo are seeking gigs locally and further afield. They’ve already played at Nanny’s in Duleek and have other gigs lined up including one at The Limekiln Gastro Pub in Julianstown on October 14th.
