Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that battery-electric powered DART Plus trains will be serving Drogheda by 2025.
A €28m contract has been awarded to a French company to install the fast-charging infrastructure at Drogheda train station.
Welcoming the announcement, local Fianna Fail Councillor James Byrne says it is great news for Drogheda.
“Ninety five DART+ carriages will enter service in 2025, of which 65 will be battery-electric powered and the remaining 30 will be electric. This new fleet will facilitate DART trips from Drogheda from 2025.
“Separate to this, a huge fund has been awarded from the PeacePlus programme to increase capacity and frequency on the Enterprise service and this will also start in 2025.
“I’m proud of this investment and of my brother Thomas Byrne TD who played a role in securing the PeacePlus funding from the EU when he was Europe Minister. I’m glad to see it put to good use locally.”
