Ancient Folk Live Again — Roger Hudson’s ‘Dawn of Irish Poetry’ at Highlanes

Continuing his campaign to alert us all of us to the delights of world poetry, Roger Hudson with Drogheda Creative Writers brings his illustrated selection ‘Dawn of Irish Poetry’ to Highlanes Gallery, Laurence Street, Drogheda on Friday 15th November at 11am.

Reaching back to a time before writing when poems were passed on by word of mouth, the most ancient poems bring to life the Celtic and Medieval people of the times, their love of nature and food, their fear of the Vikings, their religious fervour, enjoyment of life and fear of disease and old age.

Slides of their art, artefacts and everyday life have been assembled by Garry Maguire.

Taking part in the reading with Roger are Marian Clark, Brian Quinn, actor John Kelly and guest poet Marie MacSweeney with part of her own translation of Lament of Art O’Leary by Eileen O’Leary.

Other poets whose work is featured are Anthony Raftery, Bryan Merryman and Clarence James Mangan, key figures in the story of Irish vernacular poetry.

“We are celebrating a tradition at least equal to that of Irish music and dance but rarely recognised,” says Roger.
