Community Historian Brendan Matthews will present a History and Heritage Walk n talk through the magnificent grounds of Sonairte, the National Ecology Centre at the Ninch, Laytown on Sunday, April 24..
Beginning at the 18th century Courtyard at Sonairte at 2.30pm, the tour will last around an hour and Brendan will speak about the results of the recent Archaeological and Geophysical Survey that was carried out in the grounds of Sonairte.
The survey was carried out adjacent to the ancient Hillfort, or Rath and where some new and previously unidentified archaeological remains have been discovered as a direct result of this fascinating and significant survey.
The tour will also take in the beautiful hidden trackways that run along the north bank of the River Nanny with some stunning views across the estuary of the river and the beauty of both the built and natural Heritage of the surrounding area.
Hear the tales of how our Celtic ancestors had settled in the vicinity, the mythological stories associated with the River Nanny and the arrival on the nearby shores of the Vikings during the 9th century.
Learn about the land that was confiscated and re-distributed after the arrival of Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army in the 17th century.
