Last Friday, September 10th, was a day like no other at St Mary’s Diocesan School as the students and staff assembled to celebrate the footballing prowess of eight students who were members of the all-Ireland winning Meath minor team who are also u20 Leinster champions.
During the summer eight talented St. Mary’s students donned the green and gold of Meath and won Leinster and All Ireland titles at both minors and Under 20s level.
Their successes are a result of their hard work, determination, motivation and talent. Credit is also due to their families, teachers, coaches and clubs who have supported them to reach such heights” school spokesperson Edel Tumelty said.
“Huge congratulations to Alan Bowden, Luke Hannan, Sean Emmanuel, Liam Stafford, Shaun Leonard, Oisin Black, John Mannion and Eoin Gillick”.
To celebrate their success the school organised a Jersey day which raised €1,100 for the Jack and Jill Foundation.
Not everyone could bring themselves to dress in the Meath colours (County loyalties are fierce, especially among the teachers!) but a great effort was made by all to participate in the day.
The school also organised a guard of honour outside for the students involved who received the enthusiastic applause of the teachers and students at St. Mary’s DS, no doubt earning them legions of younger fans in the school!
It ended at the front of the school where Principal Mr O’Hare (A true blue Dub) questioned the lads about their great exploits this summer and they got to reflect on a momentous summer in front of the assembled school outside.
