It has been a busy year for Drogheda Cycling Group and they want to finish it in style. They have planned a few events for the Christmas period and into the New Year and are hoping to see their regular cyclists over the festive season as well as some new ones.
Dec 16th – Pre-Christmas Cycle
Take a break from the Christmas shopping and join us on Saturday afternoon for a seasonal cycle around the town. Dress up as Santa, Mrs Claus, an elf or any other Christmas character. Alternatively you can dress up your bike with holly, tinsel, fairy lights, etc.
This is a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Centre. We are asking participants to make a donation for this good cause. Meet at St Peter’s Church on West Street at 2pm and we will finish at approx 3.30pm.
This event is open to adults and teenagers. 13 – 17 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.
Dec 21st – Winter Solstice
People come from all over Ireland and abroad to be at Newgrange for sunrise on the shortest day of the year. This year for the first time Drogheda Cycling Group is going to be there.
t will be an early start as we don’t want to miss the big event. Sunrise happens just before 9am. We expect to be able to bypass all the parked cars on our bikes and get a great parking spot close to the monument.
The distance is 12km each way with 100 metres of climbing. It will be chilly and we will be hanging around for a while so it is advisable to dress warmly and bring something warm to drink.
Meeting at 7.20am and leaving at 7.30 sharp at the car park in Trinity Street. This one is for adults only. We will be cycling in the dark so lights are essential.
New Year’s Day
Our New Year’s Day cycle for 2024 will be a bit more challenging than previous events. The route is approx 50km with about some climbing. There will be fabulous views and some great freewheeling down the hills.
A moderate level of fitness is required. Teenagers accompanied by an adult are welcome if they can manage the distance. As always we will be going at a relaxed pace. There will be two stops for refreshments.
Jan 6th – Nollaig na mBan – Women’s Christmas
For all the women who worked hard to make Christmas special for other people, now is the time to treat yourself. We will have a short leisurely cycle and a lovely lunch that someone else cooks and washes up after.
Some events may have to be cancelled at short notice due to bad weather so do check our Facebook page before heading out
