“A Heartwarming Getaway Full of Fun, Friendship, and Festive Cheer”
East Meath Active Retirement Association (EMARA) recently embarked on a magical five-day Christmas Cracker experience in Waterford City, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the enchanting history of Ireland’s oldest city to the unforgettable hospitality at Treacy’s Waterford Hotel, Spa & Leisure Centre, this festive break had it all — laughter, adventure, and cherished memories for all who attended.
Over 150 seniors from EMARA and other active retirement groups gathered for the memorable experience, which was so popular that bookings for 2025 were made before the group even checked out. From rekindling old friendships to forging new connections, the week was a celebration of community, well-being, and the joy of togetherness.

Founded in 914 AD by Viking settlers, Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, a place where ancient history blends seamlessly with modern charm. The Viking Triangle — a lively and compact “old town” district — became a must-visit spot for EMARA members. Here, they explored iconic landmarks like Reginald’s Tower, the House of Waterford Crystal, and the award-winning Medieval Museum.
Between strolling through the cobbled streets and visits to boutique shops, cafes, and art galleries, EMARA members enjoyed the city’s vibrant culture and contemporary vibe. Waterford’s proud Viking past, combined with its Purple Flag award for nightlife excellence, made it the ideal backdrop for an active and festive adventure.

The imminent arrival of Storm Darrah didn’t dampen the spirits of our intrepid EMARA explorers towards the last days of our break but we did pass on the fabulous outdoors ‘Winterval Festival’ after dusk, with its illuminated series of winding paths around the town centre, and a variety of 17 free events and activities. Instead, we wined, dined, and danced in the warmth of Treacy’s hostelry.
At the heart of this extraordinary break was Treacy’s Waterford Hotel, Spa & Leisure Centre, which became a home away from home for EMARA members. Overlooking the River Suir and a short stroll from the train station, this family-owned hotel is known for its unbeatable Irish hospitality.
As one EMARA member put it: “I’ve stayed in many hotels over the years, but I’ve never experienced such genuine care and kindness from staff and management. They treated us like family, and I will be back next year.”

A Packed Agenda of Fun and Entertainment
The schedule for EMARA’s Christmas Cracker was brimming with activities to suit every interest. From Bingo in Timbertoes to Aqua Aerobics in the leisure centre, there was something for everyone. Those seeking relaxation enjoyed afternoon movies like Gone with the Wind and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, while others immersed themselves in the Christmas spirit at the mulled wine reception.
Live entertainment each evening had guests singing and dancing along to hit songs from decades past. The hotel’s four-course dinners, crafted by world-class chefs, offered variety and deliciousness that would rival any top-tier restaurant.

Why Social Interaction Matters for Seniors?
EMARA’s Christmas Cracker wasn’t just a chance to sightsee — it was a chance to combat isolation and foster friendships. For seniors, social interaction has been proven to significantly improve mental health, boost cognitive abilities, and increase overall well-being. According to research, seniors who engage in social activities are 40% more likely to maintain cognitive function and 30% less likely to experience depression.
With loneliness affecting many older adults, events like EMARA’s Christmas Cracker provide a vital lifeline. They foster friendships, reduce isolation, and provide much-needed opportunities for joy and laughter. Every meal, activity, and conversation contributes to a healthier, happier community.

As one member put it: “I haven’t laughed this much in years. It’s a reminder that life is for living, no matter your age.”
