The Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Independent Councillor Kevin Callan, has said that speed limit signage is urgently needed on Phase One of the Northern Cross Route after he received a number of complaints about cars overtaking at speed on the new road.
Cllr Callan said that he has had contact from a number of walkers, cyclists and motorists who have reported traffic passing and overtaking at great speed.
He says the presence of 50km signs at the end of the road at The Rosehall Roundabout and Ballymakenny Road and as you exit heading up towards DIFE suggests to drivers that the speed limit is faster on the cross route when you are driving on it.
“We need to have this signage in place as a matter of urgency” Cllr. Callan said.
“This road is normally not congested which allows for a free flow of traffic, but in such circumstances motorists are more likely to overtake when there are clear lines of sight ahead.
“I am raising this matter with the officials in the County Council to ensure this happens as soon as possible.
People have been in touch about the road being used as a speed track and this also creates a noise issue for nearby residents in new estates, particularly in the evening time.
