There was a strong sense of homecoming at Highlanes Gallery as Drogheda native JPR Lyons launched his new book, Wilde’s Way, The Boyne and Blackwater Revisited.

The book was published on the 150th anniversary of the death of Sir William Wilde and was launched on Wednesday in front of family, friends, neighbours and well-wishers.

JPR, or John Lyons, grew up in Drogheda and was a director of long-established local bakery Peter Lyons Ltd during the 1980s.

A lifelong student of history, art, archaeology and the natural world, John was able to devote more time to those interests following his retirement.

Retracing the route

The project saw John follow the original journey along the Boyne and Blackwater, tracing the rivers from source to sea.

Rather than travelling by jaunting car, as Wilde had done, John completed the route by bicycle.

Speaking at the launch, Highlanes Gallery Director Aoife Ruane highlighted John’s commitment not only to cycling and mapping the journey, but also to reflecting on it and documenting it in the book.

She described the publication as an addition to the body of work exploring Ireland’s history and mythology.

John also spoke about the themes in the book and how the project developed.

Muireann Lyons, Development Manager of the Boyne Rivers Trust, also addressed the gathering, speaking about the River Boyne and the challenges posed by climate change and globalisation, as well as projects being undertaken by the trust.
