A contract has been signed for the first phase of improvements to the North Boyne Greenway in Drogheda, with construction expected to begin later this month.
Louth County Council has appointed Mullacurry Construction to carry out the works on the north bank of the River Boyne.
The project will include new surfacing, fencing, drainage, public lighting, seating and bins along the existing route.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late September, with phase one expected to be completed in early 2027.
Public procurement records confirm that Louth County Council awarded a contract for construction of a shared greenway from Horseshoe Lane towards Lower Mell Road.
Longer route planned
According to the Council, phase one will focus on upgrading around 950 metres of the existing greenway.
Subject to future contracts, a second phase would add a further 650 metres of trail and additional improvements.
Once all phases are complete, the Council says the North Boyne Greenway will provide a continuous route of approximately 1.6km.
O’Connor Sutton Cronin has been appointed as Project Supervisor Design Process, Designer and Employer’s Representative for the project.
€500,000 outdoor recreation funding
The scheme received €500,000 in funding under Measure 3 of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme in November 2025.
The investment is intended to improve outdoor recreational infrastructure and encourage activities including walking, leisure cycling and running.
The greenway project also forms part of a wider effort to improve recreational and active travel infrastructure around Drogheda.
‘A valued recreational amenity’
Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr Dolores Minogue said the project would improve the experience for people using the route.
“Louth County Council is committed to investing in high-quality outdoor recreation infrastructure across the county. This project will build on the popularity of the existing Boyne Greenway, providing improved facilities for walkers, runners and cyclists while encouraging more people to enjoy the outdoors and the natural environment around them.”
Mayor of the Borough District of Drogheda Cllr Declan Power said the greenway was already an important local amenity.
“The Boyne Greenway is a valued recreational amenity for residents and visitors, and these improvements will make it safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for everyone who uses it. This investment will enhance an important outdoor space in Drogheda and support healthier, more active lifestyles within our community.”
Local contractor appointed
Mullacurry Construction, based in Dromin, Co Louth, has been appointed to carry out the works.
Co-founders and Directors Darren and David Byrne said the company was pleased to be involved.
