Drogheda United Galway United FAI Cup quarter-final

Drogheda United will look to book their place in the semi-finals of the FAI Cup when Galway United visit Sullivan & Lambe Park on Friday night.

The Club Orange Men’s FAI Cup quarter-final kicks off at 7.45pm on Friday, 4th September and will be shown live on LOITV.

Kevin Doherty’s side head into the tie looking to bounce back from last week’s dramatic 3-2 league defeat to Dundalk in Drogheda.

Dundalk took the lead through Cian Dillon before Drogheda responded with two goals in quick succession.

Keegan Ancelin fired home from a tight angle before Brandon Kavanagh’s finish put the Boynesiders 2-1 ahead going into half-time.

Dundalk drew level in the 67th minute when substitute Ronan Teahan met Tom Grivosti’s delivery and diverted the ball beyond Luke Dennison.

The winner arrived in the closing stages when Daryl Horgan converted an 89th-minute free kick to give the visitors all three points.

Little between the sides this season

Friday’s cup tie will be the fourth meeting between Drogheda United and Galway United in 2026.

There has been little to separate the sides so far.

Drogheda started the league season with a 1-0 win at Eamonn Deacy Park, with Jago Godden scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.

Galway responded with a 3-2 victory at Sullivan & Lambe Park in April.

The most recent meeting took place in Galway on 7th August and ended scoreless, with neither side able to find a breakthrough.

That leaves both teams with one win apiece and a draw from their three league meetings heading into Friday’s knockout tie.

Drogheda looking for another cup run

Drogheda reached the quarter-finals with a 3-0 away victory over College Corinthians in the previous round.

Ancelin scored twice in that game, while Mark Doyle also found the net as the Boynesiders booked their place in the last eight. Drogheda Life covered that victory ahead of the club’s subsequent league meeting with St Patrick’s Athletic.

Galway, meanwhile, progressed from the third round after a 1-1 draw with Bray Wanderers before winning the resulting penalty shootout.

With the league season entering its closing stages, Friday gives Drogheda another opportunity to extend their cup campaign and secure a place among the final four.
