Construction is due to begin on a new pump station at The Dunes in Mornington, following concerns over flooding in the area.
East Meath Fianna Fáil Councillor Stephen McKee has welcomed the development, saying he has raised the need for flood relief measures with Meath County Council and the OPW in recent years.
‘There continues to be a high risk of flooding at The Dunes, Mornington and there is an urgent need to provide this permanent storm water pumping station.’
‘These works will form part of the overall Mornington Flood Relief Scheme. I have stressed to both the OPW and Meath County Council the importance of ensuring that the channel of the Mornington stream all the way up past Foxbury is cleared out also of overgrowth to help mitigate against any potential flooding come Winter time’ continued McKee
‘The OPW tell me that the impact on local residents will be kept to a minimum during the construction works, which are expected to last about 4 months. A traffic management plan is being put in place.’
‘It is important that all flood prevention works for coastal East Meath, the plans for which Meath County Council have outlined, are carried out as soon as possible. We know that the heavy periods of rainfall that occurred these last couple of Winters will very likely happen again and that flooding is happening more regularly in the area.’
‘Some basic measures such as ensuring that gullies and streams are clear from overgrowth and debris needs to be done on a regular basis. I have identified these areas to the Council.
Cllr McKee said he has spoken to many residents affected by flooding in recent years and has assured them he will continue pushing for measures to help prevent homes from being impacted again in the future. He said everything possible must be done to protect families from experiencing the same problems again.
