Louth County Council replaced the trees on West Street approximately three to four years ago as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the town centre environment. However, within a relatively short period following planting, it became apparent that the replacement trees were in decline. Despite monitoring and assessment, the trees have since died and can no longer contribute to the streetscape as intended.
While the exact cause of the tree loss has not been definitively established, it is suspected that ground contamination specific to this location may have been a contributing factor.
As the trees are dead, Louth County Council is planning to remove them in the interest of good streetscape management and public safety. The Council recognises the importance of maintaining a strong tree presence on West Street and has examined options for replacement planting.
Replanting new trees in the existing tree pits would require significant works, including the removal and replacement of soil, installation of a new tree pit system, excavation and reinstatement of footpaths, and the relocation of certain underground services. These works would require detailed planning and substantial resources. While the Council is not currently in a position to undertake these extensive works, it remains committed to enhancing the public realm in Drogheda. As an alternative solution, Louth County Council proposes to install large, planted tree containers along West Street in the coming months. This will ensure the continued presence of trees on Drogheda’s principal shopping street while longer-term solutions are explored.
