Fianna Fáil Local Area Representative Charlie Kinsella has raised concerns over a proposed Active Travel scheme stretching from George’s Street to Drogheda Train Station and Marsh Road.
The plans are currently open for public consultation, with residents, business owners and commuters being encouraged to review the proposals and make submissions before 1st September.
According to the consultation documents, the scheme includes new cycle paths, additional traffic lights and changes to parking and existing traffic management measures.
Kinsella says he is concerned the proposals could lead to longer traffic delays, reduce road space available for emergency vehicles and have a negative impact on local businesses and residents.
“We have seen previous traffic schemes negatively affect our town centre, and I am not convinced this will help business, traffic, or the town overall,” he said.
Key elements of the proposed scheme include:
- Removal of six filter lanes, including at Marsh Road, Donore Road, John Street, St Mary’s Bridge, Haymarket Bridge and the Bridge of Peace.
- Installation of new traffic lights and three pedestrian and cycle crossings at Rathmullan Road.
- Removal of eight parking spaces on John Street, affecting residents and local shops.
- Removal of concrete safety barriers between Scotch Hall and George’s Street.
- No provision for bus pull-in bays, ramps or rumble strips to slow traffic.
- Three new pedestrian crossings at the top of Marsh Road.
- New cycle paths along the Dublin Road and part of Marsh Road.
Kinsella is urging people in Drogheda to examine the proposals before the consultation closes.
“This is a major change to how traffic will move through Drogheda. People deserve to understand the full impact and have their say before decisions are finalised,” he said.
