The Drogheda Cycling Group has welcomed plans for new segregated cycle lanes between the Bridge of Peace and MacBride Train Station, but notes that parts of the proposed route still require strengthening.
Chairperson Noel Hogan said: “We have been frustrated with the slow development of these schemes, but welcome this progress. In our submission, we will seek to ensure the scheme is safely segregated from traffic throughout, as the council’s own road safety audit of the scheme called for. We are particularly concerned that the Marsh road development doesn’t appear to be segregated from the rest of the road and is marked as “shared space”. In order for roads like these to be really “shared spaces” we will need more than just lines painted on tarmac, we need real traffic calming measures”
Research into road design consistently shows that safe, segregated cycling infrastructure can improve safety for all road users, not just cyclists. We need to get it right.”
