A local public representative has expressed disappointment following an incident of vandalism outside the Augustinian Church in Drogheda, where two planters were destroyed and their contents strewn across the ground.
Aontú representative Michael O’Dowd described the damage as “deeply disappointing and unacceptable” and said the incident had caused upset within the local community.
“The vandalism carried out over the weekend outside the Augustinian Church in Drogheda, where two planters were destroyed, is deeply disappointing and unacceptable,” he said.
“While some may dismiss this as minor damage, targeting property outside a place of worship is particularly disrespectful and upsetting for parishioners and the wider local community.
There is understandable concern whenever churches or religious spaces are singled out in this way by people engaged in wanton vandalism.”
Mr O’Dowd said a stronger response was needed to tackle anti social behaviour and vandalism in the town.
“We need a zero-tolerance approach to vandalism and anti-social behaviour of any kind in our town. Places of worship should be treated with respect, regardless of denomination or belief.”
He also urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Gardaí.
