Our new series on Drogheda Life is shining a light on people from the town and wider North East who are now living and working abroad. This week featuring, Ciaran Branigan, who has built a career in Dubai after taking a chance at a young age.
Originally from Drogheda, Ciaran attended St Oliver’s Community College before going on to study Law at Maynooth University. However, he quickly realised that the traditional path was not for him and decided to make a change.
At 21, he made the decision to leave university and move to Dubai with no experience, no guaranteed income and no safety net, taking up a commission only role in real estate.
“I wanted something more performance driven, where your results directly reflect your income and progression,” he said.
The early days were challenging. Starting from scratch in a new country while working in a competitive industry meant long hours, uncertainty and dealing with rejection.
“The biggest challenge at the start was the uncertainty. No basic salary, living in a new country, and having to build everything from scratch. There’s a lot of rejection in real estate, especially early on, so learning to stay resilient and disciplined was key.”
Despite those challenges, he stayed focused and consistent. Now based in Dubai, he works as an Associate Director specialising in luxury and off plan properties, working with investors and high net worth clients.
As he approaches his 23rd birthday, he has already sold over €30 million worth of property within an eight month period, become one of the youngest Associate Directors in his company and recently purchased his first investment property.
Working in Dubai has been a major shift from life at home.
“It’s completely different. Drogheda will always be home, but Dubai operates on another level in terms of pace, opportunity and scale. Everything moves faster here, and results come down to how much work you’re willing to put in.”
He describes life in the city as fast paced and competitive, but says that is part of what makes it rewarding.
“It’s been life changing. Dubai is extremely fast paced and competitive, but that’s what makes it exciting. If you’re willing to work hard and stay consistent, there are huge opportunities here.”
While he has embraced life abroad, he still misses aspects of home.
“Of course. Family and close friends are the main things. Also just the simplicity of being at home. It’s something you don’t fully appreciate until you’re away.”
For others thinking about making a similar move, his advice is simple.
“Take the risk, especially when you’re young. There’s never a perfect time, but if you’re willing to work hard and stay consistent, it can completely change your life. Just be prepared. It’s not easy, especially at the beginning.”
Looking ahead, his focus is on continuing to grow his career and build on what he has achieved so far.
He plans to expand his client base, explore further investment opportunities and continue building a strong property portfolio alongside his work.
His story is one of taking a chance early, backing yourself and staying committed, even when the outcome is uncertain.
