Meath events planned to mark National Biodiversity Week

Meath County Council is marking National Biodiversity Week with a series of events taking place across the county from May 15 to 24.

Supported by the Heritage Council, the programme will highlight the range of wildlife found in Meath’s coastal, river, woodland, farmland and urban environments.

A number of guided walks and field trips are planned, giving people the chance to learn more about bats, birds, bumblebees and the different habitats found across the county, including hedgerows, sand dunes and bogland.

The council’s library service will also host events, including workshops with horticulturist Aoife Munn, focusing on what to plant and how to garden for a changing climate.

Events are being organised in partnership with a range of groups including Solstice Arts Centre, Inland Fisheries Ireland, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Irish Peatland Conservation Council, Hedgerows Ireland, BirdWatch Ireland Meath branch and Bat Conservation Ireland.

Schools are also being encouraged to take part through activities such as a Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt, designed to help students explore nature in their local area.

Welcoming the programme, Meath County Council Biodiversity Officer Ben Malone said: “Engaging and connecting with nature in an enjoyable and interactive way is a great first step in learning more about your local environment and becoming actively involved in local conservation projects.

“National Biodiversity Week brings people of all ages together under the common thread of curiosity and interest in the natural world.

“The events Meath County Council are facilitating, plus the several other events that are being run by other groups in the county, will offer opportunities to have fun and to be inspired by our local wildlife and green space. I hope there is an event for everyone to explore Meath’s environment and to learn how to play a part in protecting it.”

Most events require registration, with full details available at biodiversityweek.ie.
