Local historian Brendan Matthews is set to host his first summer History and Heritage Walk and Talk in Drogheda next week.
The event will take place on Wednesday, April 15, starting at 7.30pm outside Scholars Townhouse Hotel on King Street.
The theme of the walk is “10 years of Catalpa Rescue”, focusing on one of the most daring rescue stories in Irish history. Participants will hear the story of how the last remaining Fenian prisoners held in Western Australia escaped aboard the Catalpa.
The walk will also explore Drogheda’s revolutionary network from the 1850s to the 1870s, highlighting the role of local men who risked their lives in the fight for freedom.
The guided tour will last approximately one hour and is free to attend, with donations welcome.
