Tributes Paid to former Smiths Garage Owner Anthony Smith

Widespread tributes have been paid to Anthony Smith, esteemed chairman and former managing director of Smiths Garage on North Road, Drogheda, who has sadly passed away.

The 87-year-old businessman died peacefully last week, surrounded by his family at his home in Seapoint, Termonfeckin. A lifelong Drogheda United supporter, Anthony served as chairperson from 1974 to 1978, a successful era for the club which included their first ever FAI Cup Final appearance at Dalymount Park in 1976.

In a statement, Drogheda United said everyone associated with the club was saddened by his passing, describing his term as chairperson as one of the club’s greatest periods. The club also acknowledged the longstanding support of Smiths of Drogheda through both bright and challenging times and thanked Anthony for his wonderful service.

Anthony was also a devoted member of Seapoint Golf Club, where he played weekly and proudly served as President in 2017. Club captain Col Kerr said he would be fondly remembered for his warmth, dedication and for being a true ambassador for the club, adding that he will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife Mary and their children Aisling, Nicky, Tony and Kevin. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2021.

In a message shared on behalf of the Smith family, they expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming love and support received following the passing of their dad and grandfather. They thanked everyone for their kind words, prayers, visits, and thoughtful gestures, saying the support had brought great comfort during a difficult time. The family also confirmed that business has now returned to normal operating hours and extended a sincere thank you to customers, suppliers, family, and friends for their patience and consideration.
