Tributes Paid to Drogheda Businessman and Former Drogheda United Chairman Anthony Smith

Widespread tributes have been paid to Anthony Smith, the esteemed chairman and former managing director of Smiths Garage, North Road, Drogheda, who has sadly died.

The 87 year old businessman passed away last Monday night surrounded by his family at his home in Seapoint, Termonfeckin.

Anthony was a lifelong Drogheda United fan and served as chairperson from 1974 to 1978, a very successful period for the club which included their first ever FAI Cup Final appearance at Dalymount in 1976, when they were beaten by Limerick.

In a statement, Drogheda United said: “ Everyone associated with Drogheda United is saddened by the passing of our former Chairman, Anthony Smith.
“ Anthony was chairperson from 1974-78, some of our greatest days , including our appearance in the 1976 FAI Cup Final. He continued to be involved with and support the club throughout his life. Smiths of Drogheda have been a constant sponsor of the club throughout our brightest and darkest days. Thank you Anthony for your wonderful service to our club.”

Anthony was also an avid golfer and played every week without fail at Seapoint Golf Club, where he served as President in 2017.

Seapoint Golf Club captain Col Kerr said: “ It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our past President Anthony Smith. Anthony served as President in 2017 and will be fondly remembered for his warmth, dedication and a true ambassador for the club. He will be sadly missed. Deepest condolences from myself and the club members.”

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife Mary, and their children Aisling, Nicky, Tony and Kevin. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2021.

Anthony will repose at the home of his son Nicky, Seapoint Road, Termonfeckin (A92 RF82), today, Thursday, from 2pm until 8pm. His funeral Mass will be held on Friday afternoon at 2.30pm in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Termonfeckin, with burial afterwards in the old cemetery.
