21 Gardaí Assaulted While on Duty in Louth, Cavan and Monaghan Division Last Year

A total of 21 gardaí in the Louth, Cavan and Monaghan Division were assaulted while on duty last year, according to figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by Northern Sound Radio.

The data also shows that 344 gardaí were assaulted nationwide while carrying out their duties during the same period.

Further details released under the FOI request highlight other incidents in which serving gardaí in the Louth, Cavan and Monaghan Division were injured while on duty. One garda was injured as a result of an animal related incident, two members were hurt in a road traffic collision, and seven gardaí sustained injuries following trips or falls while working.

The figures relate specifically to assaults on garda members that resulted in formal occupational injury reports being filed. They do not include minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

It also emerged that there was an increase last year in the number of gardaí in the division who were on sick leave while recovering from injuries sustained in the line of duty.
