Supporters of Drogheda United have been recognised for their outstanding community spirit after receiving a BD and Drogheda and District Chamber Community Champions award for their efforts in helping families during the Christmas period.
Working in partnership with Drogheda Utd FC, the Famous 45 Ultras organised a major collection drive in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The initiative saw food, toys and other essential items gathered and distributed in almost 200 Christmas hampers to families and organisations across the area.
Thomas Sullivan from the Famous 45 Ultras said the group was delighted to be involved and that the stories they encountered have already inspired plans for the future.
“We’d love to see more businesses coming on board for this year. There are families who need support out there and we just wanted to play our part in that,” he said.
Best known for bringing colour, atmosphere and noise to Drogheda United matches both home and away, the Ultras have also played an active role in a number of community initiatives beyond Christmas.
Last May, their involvement in a charity match helped raise €20,000. The event took place at Sullivan and Lambe Park and featured a match between SOSAD Ireland, represented by the Social Supporters Group, and Drogheda Women’s and Children’s Refuge Centre, represented by the Famous 45 Ultras.
Catherina McGuirk, Plant Manager at BD, said it was a pleasure to meet the group and praised their strong sense of community.
“Drogheda has always been a town with a big heart and at times you need to recognize those that go that extra mile for our people. The Ultras helped deliver something special for so many people last Christmas and hopefully that drive can gather even more momentum in 2026,” Drogheda and District Chamber CEO Hubert Murphy said.
