Dog shit is an ever present reality in all our lives. As soon as you leave your home you are in danger of stepping in it or getting the wheels of your pram or wheelchair fouled by it.
The slimy topic got another airing at the Borough of Drogheda meeting yesterday evening by Councillor Pio Smith who has been incensed by the rise in apparent dog fouling in recent months.
He was further angered when he heard that an estimated 50% of dogs have not been micro chipped and 30% of them have no licence.
“We have to do something different to solve this menace” Councillor Smith said. What powers do we have to make these people register their dogs? He asked.
He suggested that samples could be taken of dog turds and DNA testing carried out to identify the guilty parties – canine and human.
Pio wasn’t a bit pleased to be told that this would be too expensive.
“Don’t write this off because of cost” he said, “surely the fines levied will pay for it.”
