There has been intense Garda activity in the Moneymore area of Drogheda all morning after a suspected pipe bomb was discovered on a grass verge in the centre of the densely populated area.
Gardaí arrived at the scene at approximately 10.20am after they received reports of the discovery of a suspicious device.
Garda personnel cordoned off the area and called in the Bomb Squad or, to give them their official name, the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
The surrounding areas were evacuated as a precaution.
The Armed Support Unit also attended the scene.
When the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EDU) arrived the suspect device was first moved using a robot from the grass verge a short distance to a safer area at the back of some houses.
A bomb disposal expert then set about a close inspection of the device and after some time he could be seen putting it into a protective bag and he carried it to the EOD vehicle.
The device was deemed to be non-viable by the EOD Unit.
