The people of Drogheda have always been keen supporters of the annual Daffodil Day in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and the organisers are hoping they will do so again this year even though there will be no street collections or events.
Lizanne Allen got the ball rolling back in in 1987 when she first volunteered as a community fundraiser for the charity. Since then she has been joined by a loyal army of volunteers, to fundraise and promote the work of the Irish Cancer Society.
In 2014 the Irish Cancer Society-Drogheda Volunteers challenged the community of supporters to switch from green after St Patrick’s Day and Paint the Town Yellow!
The response was unbelievable, the town was awash with yellow, showing every cancer patient in the locality that they are within a huge community of care!
Drogheda’s most iconic female supporter, Mary McIntyre, has changed her costume to yellow and is waving frantically at passers by at the Mary Street – Dublin Road Junction!
Daffodil Day Drogheda has evolved into an annual festival of events including:
- Paint The Town Yellow
- Bouquets to Business
- Annual Street Collection Day
- The Yellow Army March in St Patrick’s Day Parade
- Cheltenham Gold Cup Business Lunch
- Annual Daffodil Day Fashion Show.
Every sector of the Greater Drogheda Area has taken part in this annual drive to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Daffodil Day Drogheda participation stands out as a clear example of a community identity that goes beyond the medieval town walls, embracing the villages and towns north and south of the Boyne estuary.
Community groups, schools, professional services sectors, clothes shops, independent high street retailers, restaurants, coffee shops, hairdressers, hotels, car sales showrooms and so many others unite and support the Drogheda Volunteers committee driven to make sure the work of the Irish Cancer Society continues.
There are no events this year but rest assured they have not gone away and no doubt they will be back bigger and better in 2022. To make a donationto this worthy cause just click theadvert at the top of this page which sponsored by Drogheda Life.
