Local TD Ged Nash has welcomed a commitment from Education Minister Norma Foley that officials in her department will meet with the Board of the Drogheda Educate Together School to discuss the need for additional first year places for the 2021-2022 school year.
The commitment came in a reply to a Daíl question he tabled to Minister Foley.
The move follows the Department’s seemingly bizarre decision to relocate the Drogheda Educate Together Secondary School to the St. Oliver’s campus in Drohgeda despite the fact that it had spent over €2m on rent of land and prefabs at the site in Colpe was finally reversed following protests from parents and local public representatives.
Deputy Nash told Drogheda Life today that he had been calling on the department to make more first year places available at Drogheda Educate Together Secondary School for some time.
“I am pleased that the Minister has confirmed that her officials will meet the Board of Management, and given the space available to accommodate additional students, the demand for additional places at the DETSS ought to be met.
“We know that the school received significantly more applications for first year places than the department initially allowed them to accommodate.
“Now that the question of the school site has been settled once and for all, the logical and fair thing to do is to allow for the school to meet the clear demand for places.”
