The Drogheda Cycling Group is calling for Louth and Meath County Councils to install continuous footpaths in all of Drogheda’s estates to allow easier access for pedestrians, cyclists and the less able and also to act as a deterrent to speeding.
The Group’s Chairperson Noel Hogan said:
“Continuous footpaths means that instead of reducing the footpath to the level of the road at crossing points, the road is instead raised to the level of the footpath. This makes it easier for pedestrians and the less able to cross the road while also slowing down heavy road traffic, making our housing estates safer for cyclists of all ages.
“If we are serious about saving lives and encouraging more people to engage in healthier, cleaner travel by bicycle we need to look at making some simple redesigns to the entrances to our housing estates.
“Much has been said about a culture of car dependency but to this the Drogheda Cycling group say ‘change the culture through infrastructure’
“Reducing the speed limit to 30km/hr will save lives and make Drogheda a healthier town and we urge Louth County Council to seize this opportunity”.
