Drogheda comes 38th out of 40 towns and cities in litter league

We need to start fighting back on illegal dumping says Callan

Drogheda has been classified as “heavily littered” and placed 38th out of 40 towns and cities in the latest survey carried out by Irish Business Against Litter.

Independent Councillor Kevin Callan, who is also chair of Drogheda Tidy Towns, told Louth County Council today that there is a serious issue with dumping and littering in Drogheda and, he added, “there is no point saying we don’t”.

“Dumping is far too frequent” he says. “Part of the problem extends to re-dumping and re-littering which sees clean-ups occurring across Drogheda by volunteers and also the Council but within a very short space of time, even the next day, we see dumped materials where we have just cleared.”

” What is needed is a concerted effort with the Council revisiting its work programme for street cleaning and more and more people adopting the areas they live in for clean ups as small groups of volunteers.

“At the current time are just not able to keep up with the levels of dumping at Bring Banks, in the town centre area and at multiple roads around the town like the Donore Road”.

“I am raising the matter with the Chief Executive and Directors of the Council responsible for the area of operations, we need a massive push to start to fix this and we need to work together to do that.

Councillor Callan said that it is hugely disappointing to read the results of the IBAL survey.

“It is disappointing but unfortunately not surprising” he said. “Many groups of volunteers, and I am sure the council, will be looking at these results closely in terms of areas of heavy littering and what also could be described as dumping.

He is asking the council to carry out an assessment of the report findings and come to the Drogheda Members at the November Borough Meeting in terms of how we can start to correct this.

“I also want to make it clear, there is only so much Council and volunteers can do, the purpose of looking into this in detail is to look at how we start to fight back to correct where we are at in 2021.
