Footpaths at North Road to Mell loop walkway to be made safer

The popular looped walk which includes a section of road from the North Road to Rosehall Roundabout and the Mell Retail Park/Hill of Rath junction is to be made safer for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the Council’s new Active Travel Scheme.

The issue of pedestrian safety at the busy stretch of road was raised at yesterday’s monthly Borough District meeting by Independent Councillor Kevin Callan.

Councillor Callan asked if the Council would carry out works over Christmas to improve pedestrian safety on the stretch of road

He also asked the Council to see if a path could be installed as short term measure at the Hill of Rath to allow pedestrians to take the turn onto the stretch of road back towards Mell.

“This will greatly assist the many people who use this route daily for exercise and fresh air” he said.

“I will be placing a motion in January on this issue but if we can help over the next while until funding is available for more permanent works we should try to make this route much safer for a great number of people” he added.

“The new section of pathway at Kieran’s Motors across from the retail park is a welcome addition to the infrastructure but is still not connected properly to the pedestrian route” he pointed out.

Councillor Callan was told that 2.1km of roadway from Patrick Street to Rosehall Roundabout and also the 2.25km of roadway from Rosehall Roundabout to Hill of Rath junction and down towards Mell will be made much safer for pedestrians and cyclists under the Council’s new Active Travel Scheme.
