The Daffodils are out! It’s always such a joy to see the beautiful yellow flowers poking up out of the soil with their message of hope for the world and this year that message is doubly welcome.
So, if the daffodils are out can daffodil Day be far behind?
The last couple of years have of course been very difficult for fundraising events and it was no different for the dedicated Drogheda Daffodil Day team.
They have raised hundreds of thousands for the Irish Cancer Society over the years and they have managed to keep the concept afloat and indeed people are already asking when Daffodil Day is taking place.
The good news is that Lizanne Allen who started the Drogheda Daffodil Day (DDD) in 1987, has been in touch to say that yes, they’re going ahead and it’s all systems go for March 25th.
Cancer is of course no respecter of class or creed and Daffodil Day is one of the few occasions during the year that unites people from all walks of life in Drogheda in a common cause.
Plans are at an early stage for DDD 2022 but Lizanne says that she’s hoping to regain the momentum that was lost somewhat due to the coronavirus restrictions.
She is really looking forward to seeing the whole town turning yellow because, she says, everyone is fed up with the bad news and we need to have a bit of colour in our lives. Nobody is likely to argue with that.

Over the years Daffodil Day has morphed into several very popular events which have become more or less a daffodil festival.
In the past these have featured events such as:
- Paint The Town Yellow
- Bouquets to Business
- Annual Street Collection Day
- The Yellow Army March in St Patrick’s Day Parade
- Cheltenham Gold Cup Business Lunch
- Annual Daffodil Day Fashion Show.
