Artist Bridie Farrell travels the world to discover the beauty of home

Working on a new exhibition featuring the sights and sites of the River Boyne

Drogheda woman Bridie Farrell is a prolific artist but quite how she finds the time to paint is a mystery because Bridie also likes to travel – a lot.

Her fascination for ancient civilisations has brought Bridie to some amazing places around the world including Mexico, Petra, Machu Pichu, Cairo, Stonehenge and Easter Island.

She has a particular fascination with Rome, the eternal city, which she has visited 53 times!

All of this travelling has shaped Bridie’s work some of which is currently on show at the Barbican Centre.

Perhaps Bridie’s travelling and explorations have led her to a greater appreciation of that place called home because, for her next show, Bridie is embarking on a journey through time along the river Boyne taking in all of the important sites and sights that it has to offer.

She journeys in the footsteps of the druids and the Normans from the Mouth of the river to the Hill of Tara encountering such diverse characters as Boann and Cromwell along the way.

Bridie was born in Greenlanes in Drogheda but she now lives in Bettystown where she has an art studio. She likes to run and notches up about eight miles a day, usually on the beach.

One day, while she was running along the Boyne at Mornington, Bridie began wondering about the ancient sites on her own doorstep.

She saw a child skimming stones on the water and started to wonder at the amazing feat of the people who built Newgrange and how on earth they managed to get the huge stones along the river 5,000 years ago.

Bridie has held three exhibitions to date, two in Drogheda and one in Arklow, she has an honours BA which she received from DIT having previously gaining a diploma in Art and Design from Newry IT.
