Council declares war on gullies — 3,000 drains to be cleared

Louth County Council has finally appointed a contractor to unblock all of the drains in Drogheda many of which have been clogged with rubbish for many years.

Independent Councillor Kevin Callan raised the topic at yesterday’s Borough District of Drogheda meeting and asked for the scale of works to be undertaken and the timeframe.

He was told by Senior Engineer mark Johnston that a contractor has been appointed to tackle the problem. Mr. Johnston said that the contractors had been engaged to clear some 3,000 drains in and around Drogheda in the coming weeks and months at a cost of €50,000.

Councillor Callan welcomed the news and stressed the importance of the drains, or “gullies” as he called them, many of which have been totally blocked for years.

He said it was vital to stopping flooding and the washing of materials like cigarette butts and other rubbish down into the town centre area in particular.
