Proposal to plant trees on median of dual carriageway

With widespread concern among citizens in Drogheda about dereliction in our town and how we can improve things, Councillor Pio Smith has come up with a novel way of improving the visual aspect of the dual carriageway.

At the last Drogheda Borough meeting Councillor Smith proposed that Louth County Council focus on the dual carriageway running from Mary Street to George’s Square and install trees and shrubs along the route.

He said that a median planted with trees along this route would help to connect the area with the town centre, take the bare look off the roadway and enhance the micro environment.

“The response from the council was very positive” said Cllr. Smith.

“As part of the active travel scheme the council will ensure that the dual carriageway is integrated with the urban fabric of Drogheda linking the town centre, the bus depot and the residential areas west of the carriageway so that a sense of place is created and to remove the existing severance caused by the dual carriageway between adjoining areas.

“It is intended to create a high place value with good levels of connectivity. Based on current best practice the council want to design a boulevard with well planted medians and verges with trees and shrubs that provide a buffer between the heavily trafficked carriageway and the surrounding pedestrian and cycling lane ways.

Along with the new cycle lanes linking the dual carriageway with the Dublin Road this new boulevard will greatly enhance an area of the town that has been neglected and connect it with the town centre. “
