Liverpool and Ireland Soccer ace Megan Campbell visits Lourdes cancer unit

She’s Drogheda’s most successful footballer and her schedule as a player for Liverpool FC and The Republic of Ireland Ladies team keeps her very busy to say the least.

But that didn’t stop Megan Campbell from dropping into the Lourdes Hospital this morning with gifts and to share season’s greetings.

Drogheda Life caught up with Megan at the Oncology Unit where she met with the dedicated nursing staff and gladly signed autographs and recorded video messages.

Megan is on a short break from team duties with Liverpool and preparing with the Irish squad for the Ladies World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next summer.

While in Drogheda for a few days visiting her parents Eamon and Suzanne, Megan took the opportunity to visit the Oncology Unit because she is an Ambassador for The North East Cancer Research and Education Trust (NECRET).

The former Greenhills College student who grew up in Scarlet Street spoke fondly today of her early days playing as a young girl with local Drogheda underage teams Grove Rangers, Boyne Rovers and Moneymore United.

As a successful member of a very successful team, Megan understands the importance of team work and she was delighted to chat with members of the Lourdes Oncology nursing team who perform life-saving feats on a daily basis. Megan also brought gifts for the children’s ward on the fifth floor of the hospital.

Another focus of the charity is on educating the public in terms of cancer signs and symptoms for earlier detection along with how risk of the disease.
