The ancient Lia Fáil standing stone on the Hill of Tara where the high kings of Ireland were said to have been crowned, has been vandalised with the word “FAKE” spray painted on all four sides of the national monument.
Gardaí reckon that the damage was caused to the stone sometime between 5pm on Monday evening, 6th February and the early hours of Tuesday morning, 7th February.
Staff from the National Monuments Service and the Office of Public Works attended the scene on Wednesday morning and used a steam cleaner to remove the graffiti.
This is not the first time the Lia Fáil has been attacked by vandals, in June 2012 it was damaged in 11 places by someone hitting it with a hammer and in May 2014 green and red paint was poured over it.
Gardaí at Navan have commenced an investigation and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them at Navan Garda Station on 046-9079930 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
