Illegal parking is out of control across Drogheda – Callan

The traffic chaos in Drogheda continues to worsen with each passing week as more and more private cars and commercial vehicles crowd into the narrow streets of the town every day with totally inadequate spaces for parking available.

Independent Councillor Kevin Callan says that illegal parking in bus bays, loading bays and disabled parking spaces is totally out of control in Drogheda and that this having serious knock-on effects for motorists, businesses and those who are entitled to access each type of bay.

Callan, who for the past six months has been working with the Council to repaint disabled spaces in Drogheda has said that the majority of bus bays and loading areas which are clearly marked are being overrun with cars parked for hours in all types of designated spaces which is causing huge disruption to traffic flow.

“From the Marsh Road, to the North Quay, Peter Street, Laurence’s Street and everywhere else, we have blatant ignoring of the marked bays and footpaths in Drogheda” he said.

“I am speaking to those who need access to disabled spaces which are full all day with cars owned by people who are not entitled to use them and people are really being impacted by this activity.

“HGV and other delivery drivers end up having to circle the town for hours trying to find a space when loading bays like the one in Peter Street may have up to five cars parked with no consideration for the massive traffic jams this can cause.

The loading bay at Peter Street is often blocked with private cars.

“People with the right to park in disabled spaces simply have not got a hope even when they are repainted. People are ignoring the markings and parking as they please.

“The time has come to get decisive and coordinated action between the Council Wardens and An Garda Siochana.

Another blocked loading bay.

“Further to the blocking of designated bays, we also have people parking on footpaths and blocking pedestrian crossings.”

Councillor Callan said he will be liaising with the Council and the Gardai on these issues.
