An elderly man has died and another younger man is in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital following a fire at a house on the Seapoint Road in Termonfeckin early this morning.
The alarm was raised shortly after 2.00 this morning by a passer-by and Gardaí and Drogheda Fire service personnel rushed to the scene.
Fire appliances from a number of stations across County Louth were mobilised including two from Drogheda Fire Station, along with two from Ardee, one from Dunleer, an Aerial Appliance and a fire appliance from Dundalk Fire Station, along with a Senior Fire Officer.
On arrival crews were faced with a well developed fire in a large domestic dwelling where persons were believed to be trapped inside. Due to the intensity of the fire, four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus accessed the property using ladders through a first floor window.
After a search of the property was conducted, one person was discovered in an upstairs room and was rescued by Louth County Council Fire and Rescue. Fire-fighters commenced CPR on the man rescued. He was then removed to hospital by the ambulance service.
Another man was treated at the scene by firefighters and was subsequently taken to hospital by the ambulance service. Gardaí assisted the fire service in the removal of the man from the property.
Crews battled the blaze and it was brought under control after four hours with crews remaining on scene until 8a.m.
The male, aged in his late 80s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda where he was pronounced deceased.
A second male, aged in his late 50s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
No other injuries have been reported at this time.
In a statement Gardaí said that a technical examination of the scene will be conducted once it is made safe by fire services.
