All set for Yellowbatter Sports Day this Sunday

This Sunday sees the return of the Yellowbatter Sports Day which for many generations has given young would-be athletes from the Northside estate and further afield, the chance to exhibit their skills.

For the best part of half a century this has been one of the best community events in Drogheda during which “the ring” in Yellowbatter comes alive with youngsters being cheered on by proud Mammies and Daddies, Nanas and Grandads many of whom will have happy memories of the event during their own childhoods.

Events include Under 6 to under 16 categories of racing for boys and for girls but there is much more than races at this sports day and it’s not just for children.

The Bonnie Baby competition is always a big draw and over the years there have been some truly bonnie tots making their Mammies and Daddy’s very proud.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum is the Glamorous Granny competition which will see Yellowbatter grannies strutting their stuff like the supermodels on the catwalks of Paris or New York.

The contestants in the “Miss Yellowbatter” competition dress differently to the grannies but the competition is equally fierce.

Talking of Mammies and Daddies, there’s racing events for them too and they can get very competitive.

Old favourites such as the three-legged races, the tug of war and, of course, the fancy dress, complete the programme for the day which gets underway at 3.00 pm.

So, if it’s a bit of old fashioned community fun you’re after, the ring at Yellowbatter is the place to be this Sunday afternoon. There’s medals and trophies for all the winners and sure, if you don’t win a medal, you could easily win one of the prizes in the raffle!

This is the 47th year of the event and throughout that time the man with seemingly boundless energy, Frank Godfrey, has been the chief instigator.  Frank, cunningly disguised as Franklin Dee, will also be the DJ providing the music.

None of this fun could happen without funding and this year it is being sponsored by Caffrey’s Headstones.
