Drogheda woman Deirdre McTeggart and her daughter Amy are travelling to Addis Ababa in November to take part in the Great Ethiopian Run to raise funds to protect children in impoverished communities in the East African country from a life destroying but preventable blinding illness.
To help them on their way the popular Bagful of Songs is to host a special ‘Out of The Bag’ evening of live music this Friday, 15th September, in Sarsfields Bar, with all proceeds from the night donated to the Orbis Ireland Charity.
Orbis Ireland is currently focused on one major project; to eliminate a highly prevalent and life destroying blinding illness – trachoma in some of the poorest regions of Southern Ethiopia.
To put it into perspective, if a child in Ethiopia goes blind from trachoma they are usually put in an orphanage as their family can’t afford to provide for a child with a disability. Sadly, the life expectancy of a blind child put into an orphanage is just two years.
A simple operation that costs under €15 can reverse that blindness and change the child’s life. With live music on the night from local bands Temple Annie, Fuzz Gigolo, Nathan Murphy and Tom and Gav, there’s a great night in store, and is set to be a great success.
Deirdre and Amy are both well known in the local community, and prominent members of local athletics club, Boyne AC, the charity is one that they have supported and raised funds for over recent years, and The Bagful of Songs are proud to support them.
All donations are gratefully received, and can be made on the night or at https://orbisirl.enthuse.com/pf/deirdre-mcteggart or revolut 087 6875 944.
