Oliver Cromwell is not perhaps the most popular historical figure in these parts. Some say history is being hard on him and that he wasn’t as bad as he’s made out but never before has the word camp been used in describing him.
But a musical coming to the Droichead Theatre on November 18 is as camp as it gets. The title alone; “Oliver Cromwell Is Really Very Sorry” is a phrase that is most unlikely ever to have crossed the lips of the puritan who banned theatre because it was deemed to be sinful.
Award-winning performer and writer, Xnthony is form a totally different school of thought and his riotous musical about Cromwell is described as an electrifying blend of pop bangers and the most unexpected thrilling musical theatre extravaganza to be seen, in this wickedly funny exploration of the English colonialism in Ireland.
Touring to eight counties culminating at Droichead Arts Centre, Xnthony’s brilliant formula for the best night out at the theatre is second to none and will entertain audiences.
In Oliver Cromwell is Really Very Sorry, Xnthony tells the story of a man the English don’t remember and the Irish will never forget. Ollie’s Army returns for an Irish tour of pure carnage, legendary pop anthems and bloody historical (and hysterical) re-enactments.
Dive headlong into the psyche of England’s ‘Daddy of Democracy’ Oliver Cromwell in this pop musical extravaganza which is jam packed with surging iconic pop anthems like ‘Puritanism’, ‘Horror Scope’ and ‘800 years’ – not to mention Xnthony’s electrifying wit.
Join Xnthony and a cast of Irish and international Drag, Cabaret and musical theatre performers as they go hunt for Cromwell’s head reportedly buried in a biscuit tin in England. And don’t miss this electrifying night out!
Oliver Cromwell is Really Very Sorry is written by Xnthony, Sam Curtis Lindsay and Irish pop sensation ÓDÚ (Sally Ó Dúnlaing) with set design by Emma Bailey (designer for Tony Award-winning musical ‘Six: The Musical’. Production is by Hannah Turk.
